Can you overdose on CBD?

  • by

Many folks ask: what dose of CBD should I take and can you overdose on CBD? Well, as with all things, one should maximize the dose for effect, while not over doing it. Just like a glass or two of wine with dinner is way different than a couple of bottles every night. As is often said, moderation is the way to go.

With CBD, one generally would like to slowly increase dosing to achieve the desired effect. What is, however, the largest dose you should take without having side effects? Thankfully, there is actual scientific clinical data that provides an upper bound on safe dosing of CBD.

In order for GW Pharmaceuticals to get Epidiolex (their trade name for CBD isolate) approved for its antiseizure indications, several clinical trials were done to find the maximum tolerated dose.

FDA data on CBD overdose are here.

Maximum Tolerated Dose

It appears the maximum tolerated dose was between 10 or 20 mg per kilo of body weight, taken twice a day in divided doses. Translation: for the “average adult” weighing 70 kg (about 150 lbs), hepatic toxicity was observed in the 20 mg/kg cohort. That’s 1400 mg of CBD a day for the average adult.

So, bottom line: stay well below 1400 mg of CBD a day to prevent hepatocellular injury. We recommend a maximum dose of 300 mg per day. This provides a roughly five-fold safety buffer from any unwanted effects.

Our Certified Organic products are precisely measured for accurate concentration, then we confirm our results via third-party labs. You can be rest assured that by following our package directions, you’ll received the correct dose. Just keep it below 300 mg/day (our measuring bottle has a graduated dropper inside. One full dropper is 50 mg CBD. Thus, we recommend no more than 6 full droppers a day).
