What is Organic Science?

We came up with the name Vermont Organic Science for several reasons. First, and most obviously, we are headquartered in Vermont. Secondly, we are committed to organic principles, and practice the scientific method. Let’s dive deeper into the last two items, Organic Science, and flesh out its meaning.

Organic, to me, means natural. That’s what most people think. However, in the chemistry world, Organic means something totally different. Just ask any pre-med who had to take “organic” in college. Organic Chemistry is the part of science that deals with the properties and reactivities of the carbon atom. All known life is based on carbon chemistry, thus the moniker “organic” for compounds made from carbon.

As an aside, I was trained as an Inorganic Chemist at MIT. That means I studied other atoms besides carbon, such as tungsten. I trained myself as an organic chemist while working my way up the pharmaceutical ladder. Nearly all pharmaceuticals contain carbon.

Back to the hemp world, organic means the plants are grown without fertilizers, insecticides, or other harmful chemicals, and the plants are then processed using organic practices and materials.

So, organic hemp, organic chemistry and Vermont lead to Vermont Organic Science as our name.

Finally, our name ends in Science. What does this signify? To us, Science means that we are data driven: we assay, get numbers, and move forward based on the data observed. Science is based on facts, not on assumptions or guesses. That is what we practice, and that’s why it’s part of our name.
