A Brief History of the Hemp Plant

Hemp originated in Asia thousands of years ago. Its primary purpose was to grow its great fiber (The United States should be producing more hemp for fiber). Hemp can be traced back to Asia as early as 8000 BCE. It quickly spread to other continents for its extensive use.

The founding fathers of the United States loved hemp. It was required for farmers to grow hemp in the early years of the United States. A study in the early 20th century showed that hemp produced four times the amount of paper compared to trees. There were 150,000 acres of hemp grown in America in 1942. Unfortunately, in the 1970s, the controlled substance act listed hemp as a schedule 1 drug that stopped hemp production in the United States. The main reason for hemp as a schedule 1 drug was the war on drugs and its similarity to cannabis. Hemp got a big lift with the passage of the 2018 farm bill, which made hemp legal to grow. It is legal to grow hemp in every state in America, with Idaho becoming the last state to allow production in April 2021.

The hemp plant has a wide range of uses. The fiber can be used for many different things, including twine, yarn, rope, paper, clothes, bags, building materials, and many other things. The fiber of the hemp plant is very versatile. You can also eat hemp seeds, and are now becoming more common in food stores. Hemp seeds are high in fiber and protein. Recently in America, the primary production of hemp was for CBD production. This is very different from its historical use as farmers are growing for flowering buds compared to fiber or seeds.

Yes Organic Hemp and CBD Exists

With the 2018 farm bill passage, it is now legal to grow hemp in the United States on a federal level. This allowed the USDA to allow organic hemp and CBD production. A farmer, processor, a brand is now allowed to apply for organic certification. You can find a list of who is certified organic on the USDA integrity database. You can find our listing on there by searching Vermont Organic Science. Many companies claim to be organic, but it is all false if they are not listed on that database. You need to take many steps for an organic certification that you can find on previous blogs we wrote. Don’t trust a CBD label that says organic, do your research, look up the database, or ask the company for their organic certificate.
