Can CBD increase oxygen to the brain?

We all know the importance of blood flow to the brain. The brain, after all, is responsible for 20-35% of our resting metabolism and oxygen needs. We all know folks who have had brain damage due to low blood flow: this is a stroke. Now, new information published in the prestigious Journal of Psychopharmacology indicates that CBD promotes blood flow (CBF) to the brain.

In the study (https://doi.org/10.1177/0269881120936419) healthy participants were given 600 mg of CBD (or placebo) and then their cerebral artery blood flow was measured using very sophisticated methods. The investigators found that blood flow to the hippocampus and the orbitofrontal regions of the brain were substantiality increased. Both these brain regions are involved with memory, and the orbitofrontal area is particularly interesting, since it is involved in high level executive processing.

The test subjects were then tested for memory recall, and the volunteers who took CBD scored much higher than the placebo group in a test of working memory.

The authors conclude:

These findings suggest that CBD increases CBF to key regions involved in memory processing, particularly the hippocampus. These results identify potential mechanisms of CBD for a range of conditions associated with altered memory processing, including Alzheimer’s disease, schizophrenia, post-traumatic stress disorder and cannabis-use disorders.  

So once again, we see the potential of CBD for Alzheimer’s disease, schizophrenia, post-traumatic stress disorder and cannabis-use disorders.  

The data keep adding up: CBD is beneficial to the brain, with very few side effects. While we don’t advertise or promote CBD for any ailments (due to the FDA’s absurd regulations, sponsored by GW pharma), the information is clear: CBD seems to have a salutary effect on brain function, including memory.
