We sell many organic products. What makes a product organic? Obviously, they have been certified organic by the USDA: only products with USDA Organic seal are truly organic. But there is much that must happen to get approved for that seal. Let’s go over the process for Organic Certification.
It all begins at the farm. Local organic certifying groups use the federal guidelines to establish rules for organic farming. Our certifying body is NOFA, or the Northeast Organic Farming Association of Vermont. These folks inspect farms and processors. For the farms, the inspection includes testing for the use of artificial pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers. Anything artificial is forbidden. So, when you consume an organic product, you can be assured that the food has no residual pesticide, herbicide, or fertilizer contamination. You can also be assured that the product is non-GMO (genetically modified organism). It is as natural as it gets.
Organic Certiying Body
NOFA also does soil testing. This not only confirms the absence of pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers, but also tests for heavy metals such as mercury and arsenic. This is especially important for hemp, since hemp will suck up heavy metals from the soil. (Indeed, fiber hemp has been proposed as remediation agent for polluted areas. Let the hemp soak up the toxins, then cut down the mature plants and take then to a clean-up site for burial).
NOFA also as many regulations that I won’t go into, since they are not specific for hemp. The hemp regulations insure that the organic hemp we purchase for our products is free from pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers and heavy metals. It is pristine.
Finally, our operations have been reviewed by NOFA and we have been inspected. We only use organic materials in our processing and in our organic products, and we operate under cGMP (good manufacturing practices). Since our starting materials are pristine, so are our products.
